If you’re nuts about QWERTY
smartphones, then the Blackberry
Bold 9780 is the best that RIM has
produced in this form factor. The display
is the same 480x360 screen that the
Bold 9700 sports. There’s also the same,
amazing optical trackpad and keypad.
The 624 MHz processor is the same too,
but RAM has been bumped up from 256
MB to 512 MB, making OS 6 far smoother
and faster. The 9780 is OS 6 done right;
nothing turned off and no serious memory
leakages. There’s Universal Search, where
you can search across apps, folders, the
Web, e-mail and more from the home
screen. Then there’s Social Feeds, a social
networking aggregation app, and the new
WebKit-based browser with tabs, but
no Flash support. Things have improved
on the camera front. The 5 megapixel
shooter performs well and comes with
scene modes and an improved interface.
Video recording is now improved from
480x352 to 640x480. Although it features
the same 1500 mAhr Lithium Ion battery
as the 9700, it has a bit more juice. We
used the phone on BES and easily got
a day-and-a-half with heavy use. One
annoying fact is that if you set your device
to automatically lock itself, it will do so
even if you’re in the middle of watching
a video. The Bold 9780 has most of the
connectivity options you’ll need, Wi-Fi
802.11n support being the only glaring
omission. There is, however, support for
3G and Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR with A2DP/
AVCRP. The Rs 27,990 price sounds far
sweeter than other RIM price tags we’ve
seen recently. If you’re looking for a buy
in the premium smartphone category,
the Blackberry Bold 9780 is at a very
sweet spot. According to us, it’s the
best Blackberry money can buy.
