The DiskStation DS411j is a NAS
device geared towards home
and small office users. Although
somewhat bulky, it has a solid, attractive
metal design. Installation of drives is
simple and the two 80mm fans at the
rear offer sufficient cooling. It has space
for four 3.5-inch drives. There are also two
USB 2.0 ports at the back for additional
storage drives. The DS411j supports a
wide range of RAID configurations, so you
can setup all the drives for performance
or for reliability. The DS411j is powered
by a 1.2 GHz processor and 128 MB of
DDR2 RAM. Most the features lie in the
browser-based firmware and software.
User and user groups can be created,
and quotas and permissions can be set.
Windows file sharing and FTP access are
also present. For home users, support
for iTunes and DLNA should make media
streaming easy. For SoHo users, there’s
support for backups across a number
of devices and network drives. Home
users will find plenty of P2P services.
At a street price of Rs 25,000 (MRP Rs
34,000), the DS411j isn’t cheap, but it is
the ideal solution for those looking for
performance and data storage.
Verdict: A solid NAS device for SoHo users looking for a good storage solution.
For: Stylish design, sturdy build, great features for SoHo and home user.
Against: Expensive, few software packages.
